Migrating On-Premises VMware Environment to the Cloud (KVM)

About Proxmox

Screen and Features:

  • vCenter-style layout
  • Japanese language support
  • KVM
  • Option to choose between 3-Tier and HCI models
  • Built-in automatic backup
  • Automatic replication feature
  • Multi-site support with InfiniCloud
  • Compatible with PVD for VMware
  • NIC: VMXNET3
  • Storage: PVSCSI

VMware ESXi Registration

  • Register VMware ESXi only once during the initial setup.
  • Go to Datacenter → Storage → Add to register VMware ESXi.
  • Enter the IP, ID, and password.
  • Select the host to be mounted.

Storage Reference

  • Select the registered VMware, and a list of virtual machines in the storage will be displayed.
  • Shut down the target virtual machine in advance.
  • Select the virtual machine and click the Import button.

Import Guest Wizard

  • Enter the VM specifications while importing.
  • Basic information such as CPU and memory will be copied from VMware.

Storage and NIC Selection

  • Select Storage and NIC, along with its VLAN.
  • Click Import to start the import process.

Import

  • Import speed depends on storage performance.
    • Just like in vCenter, even if you close the window, you can reopen it by clicking on the task at the bottom of the three-pane layout.

Starting the Migrated Machine

  • Windows configuration changes will be applied.
  • The system will restart several times before fully booting up.

PV Driver Installation

  • Install the VirtIO driver.
  • The KVM version is generic and works fine.
  • Since VMXNET3 is available, VMware Tools can remain installed without issues.
  • If you want to switch everything to VirtIO, install the PV driver and then remove VMware Tools.

Migration Tips (CPU)

  • For RHEL 9 and similar systems, a newer CPU type is required.
  • Default Storage refers to the storage provided by Proxmox.
  • In an HCI environment, the storage is placed in a CephPool (accessed via librados).

Migration Tips (Storage)

  • NIC: VMware vmxnet3 or e1000 can be used.
  • VLAN: Set in the VLAN tag.
  • Storage Drivers: PVSCSI, SATA, and IDE are supported.
    • For better compatibility, configure the VMware side to use SATA or IDE beforehand.
  • VM LSI controllers are not compatible.

Pre-Migration Best Practices – Summary

  • If the OS fails to boot, set the Boot Disk to SATA or IDE in advance.
  • SATA/IDE drivers do not have protocol limitations like physical machines.
  • VirtIO is the fastest disk image type, so install the VirtIO driver beforehand.
  • NIC drivers: VMXNET3 and Storage drivers: PVSCSI work, but VirtIO is better optimized for KVM.
